2023 – Clean Drinking Water, Ethiopia

[Project Completed]

Our belief is that business should be a force for good. More than a Dent is the charitable arm of Edwin and Magda’s journey, established with the belief that lasting change can come from meaningful, community-led projects. Each year, More than a Dent funds and delivers a project with long-term impact somewhere in the world. For 2023/24, we’re proud to share the story of our first initiative in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

What We Set Out to Do

Our goal was to raise funds for Mickey Leland Primary School, which serves 1,138 children from low-income families in Addis Ababa. The school lacked proper water and sanitation facilities—leaving students vulnerable to illnesses from unsafe drinking water and unhygienic facilities. We knew we could make a difference.

Why It Mattered

The need was urgent. Without clean water, children miss school, suffer from preventable diseases, and struggle to thrive. This project wasn't just about infrastructure—it was about dignity, safety, and opportunity for a brighter future.

A Sustainable Solution

The ultrafiltration system, improved water storage solutions, handwashing and drinking stations we funded were all locally sourced and designed to prevent theft and vandalism. With an estimated 20-year lifespan, they ensure a lasting source of clean water for the entire school community.

How We Raised the Funds

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Artisan’s customers, we raised a significant portion of the funding through our Donation Days in the coffee shops. We then hosted a brilliant fundraising wine and cheese evening at The Olympic Cinema, attended by over 80 people. We also launched a ‘Sponsor a Child’ campaign and held a Curious Roo raffle, all of which brought the community together in extraordinary ways.

Our Delivery Partner: Splash

Splash, a global non-profit committed to clean water and hygiene solutions in urban schools, helped us bring this project to life. With their expertise and local connections, the project was executed with precision, cultural respect, and care. Project Waterfall, a charity that connects the coffee industry to water-focused non-profits, introduced us to Splash and the opportunity to sponsor Splash’s full water, sanitation, hygiene, and menstrual health implementation at Mickey Leland School.

Seeing It First-Hand

In October 2024, Edwin and Magda, along with their three children, travelled to Ethiopia to visit the school. Seeing the clean water systems in action and meeting the children who now have a safer, healthier environment was a deeply moving experience. As Magda recalls, “Seeing the joy on the children’s faces as they used the new handwashing stations was incredible. It reminded us why we started this journey”.

Final Thoughts

This project has been one of the most meaningful things we’ve ever been part of. Thank you to everyone—from the team at Splash to our friends, suppliers, and the entire Artisan and Curious Roo community. You made this happen. And we can't wait to share what's coming next.
